Game components Unboxing the fun!

Tales of the Arabian Nights is a board game with many components. Each one plays a unique role in the game and they all interact in different ways:

1. Game Board: The game board is a map where players move their character tokens. It shows different cities and routes that players can take during their turn.

2. Book of Tales: This is the heart of the game. It contains hundreds of paragraphs that tell stories based on players’ choices. It determines the results of various encounters and adventures.

3. Reaction Matrix: This helps determine which paragraph to read from the Book of Tales. Players cross reference their chosen reaction with the encountered character to find the appropriate paragraph.

4. Character Tokens: Each player has a character token which represents them on the game board. The token is moved around the board according to the players’ decisions.

5. Character Cards: Each player has a character card that shows their character’s skills, treasures, and status. It is used to keep track of the player’s progress in the game.

6. Encounter Cards: There are various encounter cards which are drawn during the game. These cards determine what kind of character or event the player encounters.

7. Treasure Cards: These cards represent various treasures that can be won during the game. They can give players special abilities or points at the end of the game.

8. Quest Cards: These are the objectives that players are trying to complete. Completing quests can earn players points and other rewards.

9. Status Cards: These cards represent the different conditions that can affect a player’s character, such as being cursed or blessed.

10. Destiny and Story Points: Players earn these points throughout the game. Destiny points typically come from completed quests, while story points can be earned from various encounters. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.

11. Skill Markers: These are placed on a player’s character card to indicate which skills they have. Skills can help players during encounters and challenges.

12. Die: A six-sided die is used in the game for various checks and challenges. It adds an element of chance to the game.

Game setup Lay it out, line it up, let’s go

‘Tales of the Arabian Nights’ is a unique game where players explore a world full of enchanting stories, mysteries and unpredictable encounters. The game setup is as follows:

Step 1: Prepare the Game Board

Place the game board in the center of the playing area. This board represents the known world, and players will move their characters around the board during the game.

Step 2: Prepare the Book of Tales

The Book of Tales contains the stories and encounters players will experience during the game. Place it next to the game board, alongside the Reaction Matrix.

Step 3: Set Up Player Pieces

Each player selects a character and takes the corresponding player piece, player mat, and tokens. The player mat shows the current status and skills of the character. The tokens are used to track the character’s wealth, status and special abilities. Players should place their player piece on the starting location indicated on their player mat.

Step 4: Determine Player Roles

The roles of players rotate each turn and include the Active Player, Storyteller, and Destiny Tracker. The Active Player is the one whose turn it is. The Storyteller reads the encounter from the Book of Tales for the Active Player. The Destiny Tracker keeps track of the Destiny points the Active Player has earned.

Step 5: Distribute Initial Resources

Each player starts with a number of Story and Destiny points, as well as a certain level of wealth, as indicated on their player mat. These initial resources may vary from character to character.

Step 6: Shuffle and Deal Encounter Cards

Shuffle the Encounter cards and place them face down next to the game board. At the start of their turn, the Active Player will draw an Encounter card and experience the story or event described on it.

Step 7: Random Elements

There are several random elements in the game. These include the stories and events on the Encounter cards, the outcomes of player actions, and the rewards or penalties from the Book of Tales.

Step 8: Start the Game

The player who most recently read a story from the Arabian Nights starts the game. Play continues clockwise around the table.

Game flow Round and round we go

‘Tales of the Arabian Nights’ is an adventurous storytelling board game that allows players to explore a world of fantasy and wonder, just like characters from the classic Arabian Nights stories. The game is not guided by the traditional structure of rounds or phases. Instead, it follows a unique gameplay mechanism where each player’s turn consists of three main stages: The Day Stage, The Encounter Stage, and The Reaction Stage.

The Day Stage:

  • Reset: If the player had been delayed or grief-stricken in the previous turn, they reset their game status and skip the rest of the Day Stage.
  • Destiny and Story Points: Players can then gain destiny and story points up to their current limit.
  • Movement: The player chooses whether to move by land or sea, then uses the die to determine their movement points. They can then move their character up to the number of spaces equal to their movement points.

The Encounter Stage:

  • Drawing Encounter Cards: The player draws an encounter card or lands on a city that provides an encounter. The card or city determines what or who the player encounters.
  • Determine the Reaction Matrix: Another player, the Reader, selects a matrix based on the encounter, and the active player chooses a reaction from the given list.

The Reaction Stage:

  • Reading the Result: The Reader looks up the result of the chosen reaction in the Book of Tales and reads it out. The outcome can be beneficial or harmful, altering the player’s status, skills, wealth, or position on the board.
  • Experience: If the encounter involved a character or place from their own experience, they may gain additional benefits or detriments.

The game continues with players taking turns until one player achieves a predetermined combination of story and destiny points, thereby triggering the game’s conclusion. The player with the most combined points is declared the winner.

Players'turn One turn to rule them all

In Tales of the Arabian Nights, a player’s turn comprises multiple actions that offer a variety of strategic choices. Each action can significantly influence the overall gameplay and the player’s progression. Below are the key steps that a player follows during their turn:

  1. Draw an Encounter Card: The first action is to draw an encounter card, which sets the tone for the player’s turn. The card can lead to various situations such as meeting a character, facing a challenge, or stumbling upon a treasure. The outcome of these encounters can either benefit or harm the player, depending on their choices and the roll of the dice.
  2. Choose a Reaction: Upon encountering a situation, the player must choose a reaction from the reaction matrix. This choice should align with the player’s current skills and abilities to maximize the chances of a favourable outcome. The reactions can range from fighting to negotiating or even befriending, each leading to different story paths.
  3. Resolve the Encounter: The outcome of the encounter is determined by referencing the reaction matrix and the player’s chosen reaction. The result can lead to gaining or losing wealth, status, or skills. It can also lead to character transformations, further influencing the player’s future encounters and opportunities.
  4. Decision to Continue or End the Turn: After resolving the encounter, the player can decide to either continue their journey and risk another encounter or end their turn. This decision should be based on the player’s current state in the game and their risk tolerance.
  5. Perform a City Activity (optional): If the player ends their turn in a city, they may perform a city activity. These activities include gaining wealth, healing, acquiring skills, or purchasing items. Choosing the right activity can greatly enhance a player’s standing in the game.

Each of these steps presents strategic choices that can greatly influence a player’s status and progression in Tales of the Arabian Nights. A player’s strategy should be flexible and adaptable to the ever-changing situations presented by the encounter cards. The most successful players are those who can make the most of their encounters and use their skills and resources wisely.

End of the game All good games must come to an end

Tales of the Arabian Nights is a game of strategy, adventure, and storytelling. The game ends when a player achieves a certain combination of Story and Destiny points. These points are determined at the beginning of the game when each player secretly selects their desired amount of each type of point.

To trigger the end of the game, a player must:

  • Have a total of Story and Destiny points equal to or greater than the total points selected at the beginning of the game.
  • Return to Baghdad after achieving the required points.

Upon returning to Baghdad, the player must announce their return and the ending of the game is triggered. All players, including the one who triggered the end, then perform their final turn.

Once all players have had their final turn, the game moves into the final scoring phase. Here’s how it works:

  1. Each player reveals their hidden Destiny and Story points goal that was selected at the start of the game.
  2. Players count their total Destiny and Story points acquired during the game.
  3. Players compare their total points to their goal points.
  4. The player who has met or exceeded their goal by the largest margin is the winner. In case of a tie, the player with the highest total points wins.

If no player has achieved their goal, the player with the highest total points is declared the winner. Remember, the key to winning Tales of the Arabian Nights is to balance the pursuit of adventure (Story points) with the pursuit of personal growth (Destiny points).

Scoring Did you outsmart your rivals?

The scoring system in ‘Tales of the Arabian Nights’ is a unique blend of strategy and luck, reflecting the unpredictable nature of the game’s narrative. Players accumulate points in two main categories: Story and Destiny. The objective is to be the first to reach a predetermined total of Story and Destiny points, as decided at the beginning of the game.

Story Points

Story points are generally awarded for successfully completing encounters and adventures. The number of points rewarded can vary based on the difficulty and outcome of the encounter. The Encounter cards and Book of Tales guide will specify the amount of Story points earned per event.

Destiny Points

Destiny points are typically gained from achieving personal goals or fulfilling the requirements on Quest cards. The amount of Destiny points awarded depends on the specific Quest or personal objective accomplished.

Earning Points

Players can earn points in several ways:

  • Encounters: When players successfully navigate an encounter, they often earn Story points, and sometimes Destiny points.
  • Quests: Completing a Quest card’s requirements often rewards players with Destiny points, and occasionally Story points.
  • Statuses: Gaining certain statuses, like ‘Wealthy’ or ‘Married’, can provide a one-time bonus of Story or Destiny points.

Winning the Game

The game ends when a player reaches the total number of points decided at the beginning of the game, combining both Story and Destiny points. That player must then return to Baghdad and successfully have an encounter there to win the game.

Tie-breaking Rules

If two or more players reach the winning total on the same turn, a tie-breaker is used. The player with the most total points (Story + Destiny) is the winner. If there is still a tie, the player with the most Story points wins. If there is still a tie, the player with the most Destiny points wins. If there is a tie after all these steps, then the player who goes first in turn order is the winner.

Particular Cases and Exceptions Wait… is that legal?

Tales of the Arabian Nights is a unique board game that combines role-playing and adventure elements. Though the rules are generally straightforward, there are a few special situations, exceptions, and clarifications that need to be explained:

1. Matrix Reading:

In this game, encounters are resolved by reading a short story paragraph from the Book of Tales. These paragraphs are determined by cross-referencing the encounter type and reaction chosen using a matrix. However, the player to the right of the active player, known as the ‘reader’, makes the final decision on the paragraph to read, which can lead to different outcomes for the same encounter.

2. Status Cards and Treasure Cards:

When a player gains a status or treasure, they immediately draw the top card from the respective deck. However, if the card drawn is already owned by another player, the new owner must give up another status or treasure of their choice to the original owner. If the original owner has no other cards, the new owner keeps the duplicate.

3. Skill Card Limit:

Each player can only have a maximum of 12 skill cards at any one time. If a player gains a skill beyond this limit, they must choose and discard one of their existing skills.

4. Quest Cards:

Each quest card has a specific condition that must be met to complete it. However, if a player draws a quest card that they cannot complete due to their current status, they may discard it and draw a new one. This can only be done once per turn.

5. Gender-Specific Encounters:

Some encounters are specific to the gender of the player’s character. In these cases, the player must choose the encounter that matches their character’s gender. If none are available, the encounter is skipped.

6. Game End:

The game ends when a player reaches the required amount of Story and Destiny points. However, that player must also reach one of the cities on the game board to officially end the game. If they cannot reach a city on their turn, the game continues.

7. Tie-Breaker:

In the event of a tie, the player with the most total Story and Destiny points wins. If there is still a tie, the player with the most wealth wins. If there is still a tie, the player who reached the required points first wins.
