Setup and rules summary
Game flow Round and round we go
Vinhos: Deluxe Edition is a complex and strategic board game that simulates the Portuguese wine industry. The game is played in six years, each representing a round, and each year is divided into two seasons: spring and winter. Each season corresponds to a different phase in the game.
In the Spring phase, players take actions to improve their vineyards, produce wine, and prepare for the wine tasting fair. The following actions can be performed:
- Open a new Vineyard: Players can open a new vineyard by purchasing a vineyard tile from the board. The vineyard tile is placed in an empty region on the player’s board.
- Buy a Winery or a Cellar: Players can buy a winery or a cellar and place it on one of their vineyards. Wineries increase wine production, while cellars increase wine storage.
- Produce Wine: Players can produce wine in their vineyards. The number of barrels produced is determined by the vineyard and any wineries on it.
- Export Wine: Players can export their wine to earn money and reputation. The amount earned depends on the wine’s quality and the current export market.
- Prepare for the Wine Fair: Players can prepare for the wine fair by hiring experts and investing in booths. This can increase their chances of winning the fair and earning additional reputation.
In the Winter phase, players can send their winemaker to the wine fair, sell wine to local establishments, or visit the bank. The following actions can be performed:
- Go to the Wine Fair: If a player has prepared for the wine fair, they can send their winemaker to participate. The player presents their wine and can earn reputation based on the quality of their wine and their preparation.
- Sell Wine: Players can sell their wine to local establishments. The amount earned is less than exporting, but it can be a good way to quickly earn money.
- Visit the Bank: Players can visit the bank to take out loans or repay debts. Loans can provide a quick influx of cash, but they must be repaid by the end of the game with interest.
At the end of each year (round), players receive income based on their reputation and must pay upkeep for their vineyards and wineries. After six years, the player with the most reputation points wins the game.
End of the game All good games must come to an end
The game of ‘Vinhos: Deluxe Edition’ ends after the sixth year of gameplay. Each year is divided into two halves for a total of 12 rounds. At the end of the sixth year, the final scoring takes place.
Victory Conditions
In ‘Vinhos: Deluxe Edition’, victory is determined by the total number of victory points (VPs) a player has accumulated by the end of the game. Victory points can be gained through:
- Exporting wine
- Presenting wine at the Wine Fair
- Building vineyards, wineries, and cellars
- Acquiring renowned wine experts
- Having money and wine at the end of the game
Actions Before Final Scoring
Before final scoring, players must complete the following actions:
- Export Wine: Players should export any remaining wine in their cellars. This will not only earn them victory points but also free up space for new wine.
- Present at the Wine Fair: If any player has wine fair tokens, they must present their wines at the Wine Fair. This can earn them significant points, especially if their wine is of high quality.
- Sell Wine: Players can sell any remaining wine in their cellars for money. Each barrel of wine sold earns the player one victory point.
- Acquire Wine Experts: If players have sufficient money, they can acquire renowned wine experts. Each expert acquired earns the player three victory points.
Once all these actions have been completed, the final scoring can begin. The player with the highest total victory points is declared the winner of the game. In case of a tie, the player with the most money is the winner.
Scoring Did you outsmart your rivals?
In ‘Vinhos: Deluxe Edition’, the scoring system is quite intricate, reflecting the complexity of the game. Points are awarded throughout the game for various actions and achievements, and then totaled at the end to determine the winner.
Here is a detailed overview of the scoring system:
- Wine Quality: At the end of the game, players score points equal to the value of their highest quality wine still in their cellar.
- Wine Fair: Players earn points based on their Wine Fair scoring tokens. Each token has a point value on it, which represents the total number of points the player receives.
- Experts: If a player has hired any experts during the game, they receive points equal to the number of experts.
- Estates: Each estate owned by a player at the end of the game is worth a certain number of points, depending on the size and development of the estate.
- Vineyards: Players also score points for each vineyard they own. The exact number of points depends on the type of grape the vineyard produces.
- Wine Tasting: If a player has hosted a wine tasting, they receive points equal to the sum of the quality of the wines they presented.
After all points are calculated, the player with the most points is declared the winner. In case of a tie, the game includes the following tie-breaking rules:
- The player with the most money wins.
- If there is still a tie, the player with the most experts wins.
- If there is still a tie, the player with the most estates wins.
- If there is still a tie, the player with the highest quality wine in their cellar wins.
This scoring system, combined with the various strategies available in the game, allows for a great deal of replayability and tactical depth in ‘Vinhos: Deluxe Edition’.
