About this board game
Samurai is an engaging and strategic board game that is set in the feudal period of Japan. The game takes you back in time, immersing you into the world of samurai, rice fields, and ancient temples. Your role is to use your influence to gain the support of the Samurai, Rice Farmers, and Buddhist Monks to become the ruling force in Japan.
The game’s core mechanics are based on tile placement, area control, and set collection, offering a unique blend of strategies and tactics that ensure no two games are alike. The beautifully designed components and the thematic depth of the game create a truly immersive atmosphere.
What sets Samurai apart from many other board games is its intricate balance between competition and cooperation. While each player aims to amass the most influence, they also need to be aware of their opponents’ strategies and may need to cooperate at times to prevent others from becoming too powerful.
The game begins with players placing their influence tokens on the hexagonal tiles that represent the islands of Japan. The objective is to surround and capture the three types of figures – High Helmet (Samurai), Buddha (Monk), and Paddy (Rice Farmer). The player who manages to capture the most in each category wins the game.
Samurai’s strategy involves placing your influence tiles strategically to capture the figures. However, the clever twist is that the figures are not worth any points in themselves. Instead, they are used to determine who has the most influence in each of the three categories. The player with the most influence in a category takes all the figures of that category, creating a thrilling and dynamic game where the balance of power can shift dramatically.
- Tile Placement: Each player has a set of tiles representing their influence. These tiles are placed adjacent to the figures on the board in an attempt to surround and capture them.
- Area Control: Players need to control areas on the board by having the majority of their influence tiles around a figure. The player with the most influence captures the figure.
- Set Collection: The goal is to collect the most figures of each type. The player with the most figures of a type at the end of the game wins that category.
Samurai is a game of deep strategy and careful planning. It challenges players to think ahead, anticipate their opponents’ moves, and adapt their strategies on the fly. With its beautiful artwork and intricate gameplay, Samurai offers a unique and immersive experience that will keep players engaged and entertained for hours.
