Primal: The Awakening

About this board game

Primal: The Awakening is a fully cooperative miniature board game for 1–4 players, with sessions lasting around 90 minutes, set in a fantasy world where humans struggle to survive an untamed wilderness.

Across an epic campaign, players take the roles of hunters who fight monstrous creatures while uncovering mysteries about their origins. Each mission offers meaningful choices, with different story developments, crafting opportunities, unique items, rare hunts, and consequences that shape the journey toward the finale.

At the heart of the game is an intense boss-fight system combining tactical positioning, hand management, card combos, and close cooperation. Every monster presents a distinct challenge, with its own deck representing combat behavior, targeted attacks, special abilities, weaknesses, and vulnerabilities.

During combat, hunters must complete specific objectives and adapt their strategy as each creature reveals its unique behavior. Players can build stronger group synergies by customizing their ability-card decks as their characters level up from session to session.

The campaign also develops the Forge, unlocking more crafting options as players upgrade it and expand its capabilities based on the monsters they defeat. This creates a continuing sense of progression between hunts.

For shorter or more focused sessions, Hunt mode provides one-shot encounters with setups for different gear levels and difficulties. It also includes special end-game quests that can be played using campaign characters, giving Primal: The Awakening additional ways to return to its challenging monster battles.
