About this board game
Potato Man is a 2–5-player trick-taking game with a play time of about 40 minutes, where unusual card restrictions and potato-themed scoring create surprising tactical choices.
Players deal the cards, then take turns playing one card into the center to form a trick. Each of the four colors may normally appear only once in a trick, although a five-player game allows one color to be played twice. The highest card usually wins, but the game’s three least valuable cards—yellow 1, 2, and 3—can defeat the three most valuable cards—red 16, 17, and 18—whenever one of those red cards is present.
The winner leads the next trick and takes a scoring card matching the color that won. The colors offer different risk-and-reward profiles: red has high playing cards, ranging from 5 to 18, while yellow ranges from 1 to 13, yet red provides the least valuable scoring cards.
- Manage cards across four colors with limited plays in each trick.
- Use low yellow cards to counter the strongest red cards.
- Track scoring-card supplies as colors become more valuable.
After three tricks have been won with the same color, that color’s scoring cards are depleted. Further wins then provide golden joker scoring cards, which are worth the most points. This makes it tempting to preserve high cards in a frequently winning color, but holding back can be dangerous: the round ends immediately when a player cannot play a card because of the restrictions.
Players tally their points after each round, and the game lasts as many rounds as there are players. In Potato Man, the final score belongs to the player who best balances trick-winning power, scarce scoring cards, and perfectly timed surprises.
