About this board game
1840: Vienna Tramways is an 18xx game for 2–6 players, with sessions lasting about 240 minutes, that recreates the development of Vienna’s tramway system.
Each player controls a holding company that can operate up to three tramway lines. Lines build track and stations on the map, then run their trains through stations to earn income. The money flows into the holding company, creating ongoing decisions about expansion and distribution.
Every couple of turns, a company round begins. Players decide how much money to pay out to shareholders and how much to retain for future improvements, including better trains, additional stations, and track building.
- Operate up to three tramway lines per holding company.
- Lay track and stations on the map and earn income from the stations your trains serve.
- Invest in other players’ companies or in the Stadtbahn during stock rounds.
The Stadtbahn can also be used by the various tramway lines to exercise special powers, adding another consideration to investment and operating choices. Stock rounds and company rounds together shape the flow of money and the growth of the tramway network.
1840: Vienna Tramways uses the basic concepts of the 18xx system while introducing notable twists. All-Diesel trains are available from the beginning and do not become obsolete, although their income is reduced as they grow older. Released in 2020, it combines network building, company management, shareholder payouts, and investment into a focused tramway setting.
