About this board game

1865: Sardinia is an 18xx railway strategy game for 2–4 players, with an approximate playing time of 240 minutes. Set across Sardinia and Corsica, it casts players as 19th-century entrepreneurs investing in railway construction and managing companies financially and operationally.

Players buy and sell shares, seek funding, lay track, place stations, run trains, and pay dividends. Before Phase 5, companies begin as minor companies with 40%/20%/20%/20% share structures. A minor company becomes a major company by establishing a direct route from its base to a historical destination city.

Its distinctive traffic system streamlines revenue calculation. Station markers collect traffic chips from routes, while mines also provide chips whose value diminishes as the game progresses. Each chip is worth $10, but a company’s revenue is limited by its available train capacity, creating a clear tension between expanding traffic and acquiring trains.

  • Dragons: automated foreign investors trade certificates during stock rounds, buying green-ranked companies and immediately selling red-ranked ones according to a consistent algorithm.
  • Company absorption: companies can acquire one another, adding another route to growth and financial management.
  • Private companies: when transferred to a company, they become 2 trains and provide extra traffic.
  • Market pressure: buying trains from the bank raises a company’s share price, while sales by Dragons or the president lower it.

Additional rules include discounted last 2, 3, and 4 trains, tile replacement while retaining existing connections, and loans that keep bankrupt players in the game but are deducted from their final score. In 1865: Sardinia, railway development, share trading, and the shifting strength of companies remain closely connected throughout the game.
