About this board game
1944: Battle of the Bulge is a fast-playing two-player wargame about the Battle of the Bulge, with games lasting about 120 minutes. Designed by Dan Fournie and drawing on concepts from Worthington’s Holdfast Series, it delivers a focused contest with fewer than 50 counters per side and eight pages of rules.
The game uses a flexible resource-point system. Each side receives a set number of points to spend on movement and combat, with each action costing a resource point. Because these actions can be taken in any order, players can attack an adjacent unit, create a hole, move another unit through the gap, and launch another attack before repositioning the original attacker.
Breakthroughs are central to the battle. Having the right units in position to exploit an opening is critical, while careful resource management determines how much momentum each side can sustain. The Germans begin with more resource points, but their supply decreases as the game progresses; the Allies start with fewer and gain more over time, reflecting the historical situation.
- Two-player World War II wargame
- Fewer than 50 counters per side
- Movement and combat driven by shared resource points
- Optional secret German Objective Cards
- Games designed to finish in two hours or less
Optional German Objective Cards add uncertainty to every game. Before play, the German player secretly chooses an objective, while the Allied player does not learn the true goal until the end, keeping tension high through the last die roll.
Although the publisher lists the game for one to two players, it has no dedicated solitaire rules. It is fundamentally a two-player game, though one person can play both sides. With quick rules and meaningful tactical choices, 1944: Battle of the Bulge offers an accessible way to explore a pivotal campaign.
