About this board game
2 Minutes to Midnight is a Cold War strategy game for 1–2 players, covering 1946 to 1990 in five-year turns. A scenario takes 1–3 hours, while the full campaign lasts approximately 6–7 hours.
Players control the United States or the Soviet Union in a highly asymmetrical struggle shaped by military power, economics, politics, and technology. The United States must manage presidential elections and national debt, while the Soviet Union pursues five-year plans and faces the risk of collapse if reforms go too far.
Money is the central resource, funding influence in nations, trade investments, espionage, technological research, and military expansion. Around a dozen events may trigger during each turn. Some can return in later turns, while others disappear forever, creating an unpredictable Cold War landscape that demands adaptation.
- A technology tree covering the arms race, space race, and computing advances
- Military systems for nuclear deterrence, conventional forces, and naval power
- Intelligence gathering through U-2s, satellites, and submarines
- Spies capable of conducting coups, suppressing unrest, or stealing technology
Information can help players respond faster to unfolding events, but every decision carries consequences. Strategic choices may move the world toward stability or intensify the pressure of nuclear brinkmanship.
From post-World War II rebuilding to the edge of nuclear confrontation, 2 Minutes to Midnight captures the broad sweep and shifting tensions of the Cold War in a game where political control, economic planning, military strength, and technological progress are tightly connected.
