About this board game

An Otter Won is a two-player card game that plays in about 15 minutes, challenging you to influence the best otters to gather in your den.

In this spiritual sequel to Why I Otter, ridiculous otters return for a bigger contest of decisions and timing. Cards you take into your den contain personal conditions that interact with public otter cards placed in the river, creating a changing set of possibilities from round to round.

Each trick includes a neutral setup card alongside a card from each player. That neutral card can help determine whether the high card or low card wins the round, so you must pay attention to more than simply playing the largest value.

The winner of the trick gains an important choice: assigning all three cards—the neutral card, their own card, and their opponent’s card—to the available locations. Each card goes to one of three places:

  • the opponent’s den
  • your den
  • the river

These placements let you decide which otters strengthen your own conditions, which may help your opponent, and which remain available in the river. The central question is always wonderfully otter-sized: do you want this otter, or an otter won?

With its compact play time and focused two-player format, An Otter Won turns every trick into a meaningful allocation decision. Read the conditions in your den, watch the public cards in the river, and use each win to shape the otter collection that suits your plans.
