About this board game

Barbarossa: Army Group South, 1941 is a detailed World War II wargame for 1–4 players, with an approximate play time of 240 minutes. Set during the German advance into the Soviet Union in 1941, it focuses on the struggle for Kiev and the wider operations of Army Group South.

The game uses an asymmetrical sequence of play to represent Axis armored breakthroughs and Soviet difficulties with combined-arms warfare. Detailed air rules interact with land combat and weather, while revised overrun and Soviet surrender procedures add to the challenge. A new non-operational Soviet headquarters system portrays a command structure that is rigid yet fragile.

Players receive an extensive order of battle covering artillery, rocket artillery, engineers, bridge units, armored trains, and much more. The package includes 840 full-color, two-sided counters, three 22×34-inch mapsheets, one 17×22-inch mapsheet, a ten-sided die, rule and play books, and a broad selection of player-aid cards.

  • Eight scenarios support different starting points, complexity levels, and degrees of involvement.
  • Scenarios cover the Assault on Kiev, Odessa, Rundstedt Attacks, Operation Munich, Uman Pocket, Rostov, Counterattack, and a full Campaign Game.
  • The Campaign Game uses all of maps E, F, and G, while shorter scenarios use selected map sections or the small Rostov map.

With extensive historical and design notes, plus a bibliography, Barbarossa: Army Group South, 1941 combines operational detail with scenarios that range from focused engagements to a full campaign. It presents the German advance, determined Soviet resistance, and the strategic consequences of the fighting around Kiev in a richly documented format.
