About this board game
Block Mania is a two-player tactical combat game set in the Judge Dredd universe, with play lasting approximately 180 minutes. Released in 1987, it puts rival neighboring blocks against one another in a destructive struggle.
Rather than commanding conventional armies, players take on the role of entire blocks and control their residents. Each block’s inhabitants want to destroy as much of the opposing block as possible, turning the surrounding city environment into the focus of the conflict.
The game’s appeal comes from its direct, highly themed approach to combat. Residents use whatever tools are available to vandalize and demolish their rival’s block, creating a battle defined by tactical decisions and escalating destruction.
- Spray paint for marking and vandalizing
- Guns for direct attacks
- Flamethrowers for more destructive assaults
- Heavy lasers for devastating firepower
These weapons give the confrontation a distinctly Judge Dredd character, while the rival-block premise keeps the objective clear: damage the opposing block as extensively as possible. The result is a focused two-player contest built around tactical combat, resident control, and urban destruction.
Block Mania was expanded by Mega Mania. Additional tiles and rules also appeared in White Dwarf 94 under the title Happy Hour; Happy Hour was included in the 2020 edition of the Mega Mania expansion.
For players looking for a lengthy, setting-driven battle between neighboring blocks, Block Mania offers a memorable combination of tactical play and gleefully destructive Judge Dredd theming.
