About this board game

DaDaDa is a language-building party game for 2–99 players that takes about 30 minutes to play. Players combine sound cards and image cards to create a new language every time they play.

To begin, reveal a sound card such as “PU,” then turn over an image card. Assign the image to that sound and say its new name aloud: “PU!” The next player reveals another image and decides whether “PU” suits it. If they agree, they place the image next to the sound and repeat the name; if not, they reveal a new sound card and give the image a different name.

As the game continues, several images become linked to the available sounds. Once the language has developed, additional images are laid out without assigning them to a sound. The active player secretly selects one of these images and describes it using only the sounds from the new language, perhaps saying “PU-PEH-PEH!”

1. Reveal sounds and images.
2. Decide which images belong with each sound.
3. Use the growing vocabulary to describe a secret image.
4. See whether the other players can work out which image you mean.

DaDaDa turns simple sounds into a shared system of meaning, with players deciding together how images should be named. Its flexible player count makes it suitable for groups ranging from two players to as many as 99, while the changing combinations ensure that each new game creates a different language.
