About this expansion
El Grande: König & Intrigant is an expansion for El Grande for 2–5 players, with a playing time of approximately 90 minutes. Released in 1997, it replaces two key elements from the original game with one unified set of cards.
Instead of using separate action cards and turn-order cards, players use a single card system throughout the game. Before play begins, each player culls their personal play deck to thirteen cards, creating the set they will use during the game.
At the start of each turn, every player selects one card from their available options. That choice determines several important details at once, combining turn order and game effects in a single decision.
- Turn-order priority
- The number of caballeros added to a player’s court
- The number of caballeros eligible to be added to the board
- The action available to the player
This integrated card structure makes each selection serve multiple purposes. Players must work within their thirteen-card personal deck while choosing cards that establish priority, manage caballeros, and provide an action.
El Grande: König & Intrigant is included in the 10th Anniversary Edition, also known as the Decennial edition, as well as The El Grande Expansions and El Grande Big Box. It was later expanded by El Grande: König & Intrigant – Player’s Edition and El Grande: König & Intrigant – Unverkäufliche Sonderkarten.
