About this board game
Garibaldi: The Escape is a deduction and bluff board game for 2–6 players, with games lasting around 60 minutes. Set near Ravenna in Romagna, Italy, in August 1849, it recreates Garibaldi’s attempt to evade Austrian forces and reach safety.
One player takes the role of Garibaldi, hiding and moving secretly across a large gameboard that accurately reproduces the territory of the time. The other players control Austrian patrols and must work together to discover his location and stop his escape.
Using cards, players move through the landscape while the Garibaldi player records movements discreetly with the help of a special screen. The patrols must reason from the information available, coordinate their efforts, and anticipate where the fugitive may be heading.
- Hidden movement: Garibaldi’s moves are planned in secret.
- Deduction and bluff: The patrols search for clues while Garibaldi attempts to remain concealed.
- Cooperative pursuit: The Austrian players work together to catch the escaping player.
Garibaldi wins by reaching the safe point and getting away. The Austrian patrols win if they catch him before he can escape, creating a clear and engaging race between concealment and pursuit.
With simple rules and gameplay that encourages reasoning and cooperation, Garibaldi: The Escape is recommended for families while still offering room for experienced players to adopt more refined strategies. Its detailed map, secret movement, and opposing roles place the events of the escape at the center of every game.
