About this expansion

Glory to Rome: Republic Expansion is a variant and expansion for 2–5 players, with a playing time of about 60 minutes. First made available as an official variant in the 2012 Black Box edition, this card set brings the Republic rules to older editions of the game.

The Republic rules make Glory to Rome a little more forgiving, particularly for new players, while offering a more balanced relationship between the Craftsman and Architect roles. Players begin with five order cards instead of four order cards and a Jack, and they may Petition with two cards of the same role rather than three.

The expansion contains 15 cards that replace specific buildings and add new ways to use familiar roles:

  • Crane (six cards) replaces the Circus and lets you use a card to lead or follow Architect.
  • Domus Aurea (three cards) replaces the Coliseum and lets you demolish incomplete buildings without materials when performing Legionary.
  • Forum Romanum (three cards) replaces the Forum and provides an instant win if you have one client of each type and one material of each type in your stockpile.
  • Tribunal (three cards) replaces the Senate and lets you draw one Jack when performing Thinker.

These alternate cards and rule changes define the Republic experience without requiring a separate game system. Glory to Rome: Republic Expansion is included with the Black Box edition, while this card set gives owners of older editions access to the official expansion.
