About this board game
Hierarchy is a two-player abstract game of order and power that plays in about 20 minutes. Set in the Kingdom of Darkhill, it pits royalty against plotting citizens in a contest to seize control and claim the seat of power.
Each player receives a random set of seven cards. These cards are played openly, creating a visible contest in which every move contributes to the changing order of the kingdom. Players continue taking turns until one of them can no longer play a card.
The central rule is simple: a card must normally be played on top of a card with a lesser value. However, the rules can shift during play. Either the last card played or the card currently being played may change how cards can be placed, making each turn part of an evolving challenge.
- Designed for exactly 2 players
- Approximately 20 minutes per game
- Random hands of 7 cards per player
- Open card play with changing placement rules
Because the cards remain open, both players can follow the developing position while looking for a way forward. The changing effects of the last card and the current card keep the basic hierarchy from remaining fixed, reflecting Darkhill’s struggle between established control and ambition.
When the active player cannot play a card, their opponent wins and takes the seat of power. Released in 2020, Hierarchy offers a focused abstract confrontation built around card values, open information, and the pressure of finding one more legal play.
