About this expansion
Kanagawa: Yokai is a 2019 expansion for 2–4 players, with a listed play time of 45 minutes. It adds new cards and scoring elements to the Kanagawa base game, introducing three fresh elements: kites, parasols, and paper lanterns.
To use these additions, replace any two elements in the base game with two of the new elements. This lets players bring different scoring possibilities into their Kanagawa experience while preserving the foundation of the original game.
- Kites
- Parasols
- Paper lanterns
The expansion also introduces a distinctive yokai system. Some cards display a yokai symbol that remains visible whether the card is placed in your painting or in your studio. Whenever you place one of these cards, take a yokai marker from the reserve or from another player.
Collecting all three yokai markers earns a reward, but holding them comes with a cost. Players with yokai markers at the end of the game lose points, creating an unusual situation in which you may hope another player claims the markers from you later.
With its combination of new elements, additional scoring options, and a tempting but dangerous collection objective, Kanagawa: Yokai adds a layer of risk to card placement. Decide when to pursue yokai markers, when to pass them on, and how to incorporate the new elements into your painting and studio.
