About this board game

Le Plateau is a team-focused board game for 2–6 players that takes about 120 minutes to play. Players compete to connect at least two sides of the board with their team’s counters, combining trick-taking with tactical board placement.

Before the game begins, players bid on how many board sides they believe they can connect. These bids may include possible help from a partner or additional cards, giving the opening stage an important role in shaping the challenge ahead.

To place a counter, players must first win tricks. The cards won correspond to spaces on the board, and more valuable cards lead to better-positioned spaces. Every trick therefore matters: success in card play helps determine where a team can build its connection.

  • Connect at least two board sides with your team’s counters.
  • Bid on the number of sides you can connect.
  • Win tricks whose cards match board spaces.
  • Use valuable cards to reach better-positioned spaces.

The print-and-play version requires a 78-card French Tarot deck, one of the boards provided with the rules, two sets of counters in contrasting colours, and a way to track scores. These components support the game’s blend of bidding, trick-winning, and spatial objectives.

With its long-form play time and team-based goal, Le Plateau asks players to balance confidence during the bidding phase with careful decisions during each trick. The result is a contest where card victories directly shape progress across the board.
