About this board game

Mask of Anubis is a cooperative board game for 2–7 players, playable in about 60 minutes, that combines a maze-mapping challenge with virtual reality. A free application turns a smartphone into VR goggles, allowing players to view the maze from different positions.

Players work as an investigation team trying to create a complete map of the ruin. On each turn, one player lands on a point in the maze and wears the VR goggles to examine a 360-degree view. That player describes what they can see while the other team members use the information to build part of the map.

Communication is limited by time. Each player has one minute to explain their view before play passes to the next player, who receives a different perspective. The team repeats this process seven times, combining observations as it attempts to reconstruct the maze correctly.

  • Cooperative play for 2–7 players
  • Approximately 60 minutes of play time
  • VR maze views using a smartphone and the free application
  • Seven timed turns, with one minute to describe each view
  • A shared objective: connect the entrance to the goal on the completed map

In the story, an unexcavated pyramid has been discovered somewhere in Egypt. Its complicated interior is said to contain a King’s Chamber and a treasure belonging to the ancient god Anubis. Professor B.Gammon, his assistant Seneto, and their dog Ludo investigate, but only the small dog can enter through the gap in the wall.

Using the Mask of Anubis, the team can see the maze through the walls and create a map to guide Ludo. If the completed map connects the entrance to the goal correctly, the players win. A smartphone is required to play Mask of Anubis, released in 2016.
