About this board game
No Retreat! Italian Front: 1943-45 is a two- to three-player World War II strategy game with an approximately 780-minute play time, covering the Italian campaign from 1943 to 1945.
Designed by Carl Paradis, the game combines concepts from earlier No Retreat! titles to portray a long, gruelling campaign with streamlined play. Each turn represents one month, while frontline lulls can pass quickly with little combat beyond attrition. When an offensive begins, players conduct a series of moves, combats, and activations using a variant of the Target/Counterblow system.
The campaign gives special attention to sea invasions, German fortified positions, and extended battles such as Cassino and Anzio. The Italian peninsula is divided across several maps, allowing players to change the active play map as the frontline moves north or south while conserving table space.
Players may pursue Secret Campaign Plans and high-command objectives for bonus victory points. In the Regular scenario, a player may also change sides while keeping accumulated victory points, giving both players the opportunity to take the attacking role. Event cards offer multiple possible effects, ensuring they remain useful even when their main event cannot be used.
- Regular Game: the full 1943–45 campaign, with campaign plans and optional links to Sicily.
- Historical Game: the full campaign with more historically plausible plan choices and no side switching.
- Short Early and Late Games: focused scenarios using the southern or northern Italian maps.
- Sicily Game: a fast standalone or linked mini-game suitable for learning or tournaments.
No Retreat! Italian Front: 1943-45 includes event and leader cards, unit and hex markers, three maps, a rulebook, scenario book, player aid mat, and two six-sided dice.
