About this board game

Panzer Battles: 11th Panzer on the Chir River is a 2016 World War II wargame for 2–4 players, with sessions ranging from 2 to 10 hours. It recreates the mobile defensive battles fought in December 1942 as the German 11th Panzer Division confronted Soviet forces advancing west of the Don Bend.

The Soviet 1st Tank and 5th Mechanized Armies are attempting to seal the Stalingrad Pocket and disrupt the German relief effort. Recently arrived from France and preparing for Operation Winter Storm, the full-strength 11th Panzer Division must respond to the Soviet drive through a series of rapid-fire defensive battles and counterattacks.

Players command formations across a constantly shifting battlefield using a chit-pull system by formation. This highly interactive approach reflects the speed and uncertainty of mobile warfare, while the Standard Combat Series rules continue the system developed in Bastogne, It Never Snows, and Day of Days.

  • Scale: turns represent 2–3 days, with each hex covering 500 meters or 547 yards.
  • Units: company-to-regiment formations.
  • Scenarios: four scenarios, including two one-map battles and a two-map campaign.
  • Play time and complexity: 2–10 hours, with medium complexity and medium solitaire playability.

Across the campaign, players can explore the wider consequences of the fighting: the Soviet advance is stopped, but the German forces intended for the northern pincer of the Stalingrad relief effort are consumed in the process. Panzer Battles: 11th Panzer on the Chir River includes two full-color maps, 280 counters, Standard Combat Series and game-specific rulebooks, and two six-sided dice.
