About this board game

Popular Front is a 90-minute strategy game for 2, 4, or 6 players, divided into two teams and set during the Spanish Civil War. Players compete against their ideological counterparts for both military positioning and political victory.

The game begins with the military coup signaled across Spain on July 17, 1936, and reflects how the conflict developed into a wider ideological struggle between Fascism and Communism. What started as a military rebellion became part of the larger tensions spreading across Europe before World War II.

Players must pay close attention to the position of their forces on the board, but battlefield success depends heavily on the cards in hand. Each player has an identical 20-card deck, making the way cards are used more important than simple luck of the draw.

  • Player count: 2, 4, or 6 players
  • Team play: Players are split into two opposing teams
  • Play time: Approximately 90 minutes
  • Card decks: Identical 20-card decks for every player
  • Theme: The military and ideological conflict of the Spanish Civil War

The decks also feature unique, original propaganda posters that were actually used during the war, connecting the game’s card play to its historical setting. Strategic thinking, trickery, teamwork, and courage all have a role as teams fight for advantage.

With its combination of board position, hand management, and coordinated team play, Popular Front presents the Spanish Civil War in a compact strategy format. Success comes from making deliberate choices with your cards while working with teammates to pursue both military and political goals.
