About this board game

Potion-Making: Practice is a competitive card game for 2–6 players, with games lasting about 40 minutes. Players become apprentice mages at a Magic School, gathering elements and completing formulas to create elixirs, powders, talismans, and magical creatures.

The 76-card deck features 16 different elements. Each card shows an element on its bottom half and a formula or spell on its top half. Players begin with four cards, while four face-up cards form the shared Desk of Elements, providing public resources for completing formulas.

On a turn, draw until you have five cards, then choose how to develop your magical work. You can discard a card to the Desk and score a point when its element is not already present, or use elements from the Desk to complete a formula in your hand. Completed formulas remain visible, with their points determined by the number shown on the card.

  • Complete increasingly difficult formulas for higher scores.
  • Reuse completed formulas belonging to yourself or other players.
  • Return elements used in reused formulas to the Desk.
  • Play spells to take Desk cards, decompose a completed formula, or transform one formula into another.

Reusing another player’s formula gives that opponent half the points of the more difficult formula you complete, adding interaction to every ambitious creation. Spell cards can also be chained, since playing one requires you to take another action afterward.

When the deck runs out, players continue taking turns until no cards remain in hand. In Potion-Making: Practice, careful resource management, tactical formula reuse, and well-timed spells determine which apprentice earns the most points and wins.
