About this board game

Royals is a strategic board game for 2–5 players, played in about 60 minutes, in which great noble houses compete for supremacy in 17th-century Europe.

Players use the right country cards to occupy influential positions and build their standing across four countries. Each position is linked to a title, and higher-ranking titles require more country cards to claim.

Influence is never completely secure. When another player has already taken a position, an intrigue card can be used to contest it, creating opportunities to challenge rivals and reshape the balance of power.

The game unfolds across three periods, with scoring after each one. During these scoring phases, the players with the greatest influence in each of the four countries earn victory points.

  • Compete as one of the great noble houses of the 17th century.
  • Use country cards to claim influential positions.
  • Contest occupied positions with intrigue cards.
  • Earn points through influence in four countries.
  • Complete the final scoring of individual titles after the third period.

Timing and influence are central to Royals. Securing positions can strengthen your score, while a well-timed challenge may disrupt an opponent’s plans. Because scoring takes place throughout the game, every period contributes to the race for victory.

After the third-period scoring, the game ends with the scoring of the individual titles. The player with the most victory points wins, bringing the contest between Europe’s noble houses to its conclusion. Released in 2014, Royals combines position claiming, direct challenges, and repeated scoring into one focused struggle for prestige.
