About this board game

Savage Bowl is a 30-minute, must-follow trick-taking game for 4–5 players, where success depends on winning an exact number of tricks rather than simply taking as many as possible.

Play through a brutal sporting spectacle filled with late hits, cheap shots, crushing tackles, excessive celebrations, and attempts to influence the officials. The game combines careful card play with a dangerous twist: being the most valuable player in a trick can bring punishment instead of victory.

In the first half, the referee issues yellow card penalties to the highest-value cards in each trick. The second most valuable player then wins the trick, turning ordinary trick-taking expectations upside down. Any carded player must also sit out the next round, making a spectacular play potentially costly.

Once the second half begins, the referee has had enough. No more yellow cards are given, so the game’s trick-taking tension changes as players pursue the precise target needed to score.

  • Must-follow trick-taking gameplay
  • Five suits numbered 1–13
  • A trump suit numbered 1–8
  • Yellow cards in the first half penalize the highest-value cards
  • Score only by winning the correct number of tricks

With its shifting penalty rules and exact trick requirement, Savage Bowl rewards players who can judge when to compete, when to hold back, and how to survive the referee’s scrutiny. Every trick can affect both the scoreboard and who is available for the next round.
