About this board game
Scoundrel is a single-player rogue-like card game played with a standard deck of playing cards, first released in 2011. Every card becomes part of a dangerous dungeon, where careful choices determine whether you survive long enough to clear every room.
Before play begins, all Jokers, red face cards, and red aces are removed. The remaining cards take on different roles: spades and clubs become monsters, diamonds become weapons, and hearts become health potions. Cards are valued from 2 to 14, with face cards valued from 11 to 14.
The dungeon is built in groups of four cards called rooms. To progress, you resolve three cards from each room, while the fourth becomes the foundation for the next room. A room can be deferred when the situation is too dangerous, but not twice in a row, so postponed threats must eventually be faced.
- Weapons: Attack multiple monsters with one weapon, provided each defeated monster is lower in value than the previous one defeated with it.
- Barehanded attacks: Fight any monster without a weapon, but lose health equal to the monster’s full value.
- Health potions: Recover life points up to the starting maximum of 20, though playing two potions consecutively makes the second one ineffective.
Scoundrel is a compact test of risk management and card-based survival. Choose when to fight, when to equip a new weapon, and when to delay a room while keeping your health intact.
The game ends in defeat when your life points reach zero. Victory comes only when you successfully clear every room of the dungeon.
