About this board game
Shy Monsters is an asymmetric bluffing game for two players that plays in approximately 15 minutes. One player becomes the Dungeon Master, building a dungeon and leading a band of shy monsters, while the other takes the role of the Hero and tries to escape alive.
The Dungeon Master must understand the monsters’ preferences. Each creature has favourite places in the dungeon, and respecting those places is essential if the monsters are to attack the Hero. This creates a tense challenge of planning, deception, and careful dungeon construction.
Meanwhile, the Hero must decipher the dungeon’s structure and make effective use of its special actions. Reading the situation correctly is vital, because the Hero’s goal is not simply to enter the dungeon, but to find a way out alive while facing the threat within.
- Asymmetric gameplay: the two players have different roles, objectives, and ways to approach the game.
- Bluffing and deduction: the Hero works to understand the dungeon, while the Dungeon Master manages the shy monsters.
- Quick two-player experience: a complete game takes around 15 minutes.
The contrast between the Dungeon Master’s control and the Hero’s need to interpret the dungeon gives Shy Monsters its distinctive character. One player creates the challenge; the other must properly read it and respond with sound decisions.
Released in 2019, Shy Monsters offers a focused contest for exactly two players. If you enjoy compact games built around bluffing, asymmetric roles, and the tension of trying to escape a dangerous dungeon, this game presents that experience in a concise format.
