About this board game
Statis Pro Football is an in-depth, simulation-first football game for 1–2 players, with games taking about 120 minutes. Originally released in 1973, it puts players in the role of coach, making strategic decisions on offense and defense before resolving each play with the AH Fast Action Card system.
Individual players are rated for abilities such as throwing, catching, running, blocking, and rushing the passer. Choose offensive moves like an inside run or short pass, or defensive calls such as a blitz or run defense. The matchup between the call and the opposing play can shape the result: the right defense can make a pass harder to complete or reduce the yardage from a run, while a poor read may have little effect or improve the offense’s chances.
- Player ratings covering key offensive and defensive abilities
- Fast-action cards for resolving plays
- Offensive and defensive play selection that rewards good reads
- Rules for kickoffs, punts, turnovers, and penalties
- Optional endurance rules involving player rotation and rest
The basic game includes statistics cards for every player on every team, with additional seasons of cards produced separately by Avalon Hill. Strong teams will usually overwhelm weaker ones, but thoughtful play-calling and card luck can narrow the difference. Evenly matched teams demand more planning as you work to create scoring opportunities.
With optional endurance rules, some players must rest before you can redirect a play to them. Managing player usage, cycling players, and dealing with injuries adds another layer of difficult decisions. Statis Pro Football is built for coaches who want a detailed contest of ratings, strategy, and chance.
