About this board game

Stratego is a two-player battlefield strategy game in which opposing armies maneuver across a 10×8 board, conceal their piece values, and fight to capture the enemy flag.

Each player secretly deploys 30 pieces, creating an unknown formation of soldiers, machines, scouts, miners, bombs, and special units. On a turn, move one piece horizontally or vertically. When it enters a square occupied by an opposing piece, both pieces are revealed and their values are compared. Unless a special power changes the result, the lower-value piece is removed.

Victory depends on discovery, deception, and careful positioning. Your opponent cannot see the values of your pieces, so every advance may conceal a threat—or a trap. Break through the opposing line, avoid bombs and enemy spies, and locate the hidden flag to win.

The futuristic Spin Master 50th Anniversary Edition introduces the Spotter, which may move and then attempt to capture the piece directly in front of it by guessing that piece’s rank. A correct guess captures the target without moving the Spotter; an incorrect guess reveals the Spotter instead. Spotters can target bombs and flags, or attack normally.

Use cover such as a crater to create opportunities, especially when an enemy piece has been revealed while advancing through a corridor. With secret identities, bold attacks, and calculated guesses, Stratego turns every move into a test of battlefield judgment.
