About this board game
The Great Khan Game is a card-driven strategy game for 2–6 players that usually takes about 90 minutes. Set in the Whamite Isles, it challenges players to build the most prosperous empire by controlling countries across a dozen or so provinces.
Each player begins with six cards, typically providing weak control of a couple of countries. On your turn, you can draw free cards, take the top card from the discard pile, or buy additional cards. After checking for events and resolving them immediately, you can create melds, launch attacks, and carry out political manoeuvres before discarding one card.
Melds are the heart of the game. By laying cards in front of you, you activate their powers and establish political influence. The player with the most powerful political meld, measured by the total number of flags, controls a country until another player overturns that authority through superior politics or combat.
- Political coups: Play more flag cards than are currently melded to seize control and claim those cards.
- Invasion: Use military force to challenge opposing control.
- Combat: Resolve battles with a d6, while swords, castles, and defending ships each affect the fight in different ways.
- Strategic balance: Weigh military strength, political power, and wealth as you expand your empire.
The basic turn structure is easy to learn, but choosing the right cards and timing your actions requires careful thought. Battles can be unpredictable, while political control may change hands when an opponent gathers enough influence.
Alongside its strategic depth, The Great Khan Game delivers a playful comic tone through satirical names and references on the cards. With silly characters, places, and military groups, it keeps the experience entertaining whether your empire is thriving or falling apart.
