About this board game

The Hell of Stalingrad is a historical card-driven game for 1–4 players that simulates the massive urban battle of World War II in approximately 90 minutes. Players commit division Formations and battalion Units as they fight for control of key locations in the city.

Combat centers on colorful Building Cards representing places such as the Grain Elevator, the Traktor Factory, and Pavlov’s House. The German commander uses disciplined veterans, German Doctrines, Panzer Divisions, Kampfgruppen, and elite Pioneer assault teams to batter through fortified strongholds and reach the Volga River.

The Soviet commander must hold Stalingrad with a battered army of patriotic conscripts. Reinforcements brave Luftwaffe attacks while crossing the Volga River, and survivors are sent directly into the fighting. The Soviets must prevent the invaders from capturing the entire city as the battle’s outcome hangs in the balance.

Historical commanders lead the armies: General Paulus commands the German 6th Army, while General Lopitan commands the Soviet 62nd. Hitler and Stalin demand immediate victory and may replace their commanders if they fail. Historical formations, including Kampfgruppe Stahl and the 10th NKVD, further shape the struggle.

  • Bombardment and shelling create fires that aid the Germans and turn Stalingrad into an inferno of ruins.
  • Strategic-level events influence decisions in tactical battles.
  • Heroes such as Panzer ace Von Loringhoven and Soviet sniper Vasilli Zaitsev can affect individual battles.

The Hell of Stalingrad includes 200 Combat, Formation, and Campaign Cards across Basic, Expert, and Advanced sets, plus 30 Building and Tracking Cards, 219 counters, rules, and QRS sheets.
