About this board game

Traces of War is a two-player game for 1–2 players that simulates the intense fighting between Axis and Soviet forces from August 1943 to March 1944, with playing times of 3–6 hours. The game begins after the battle of Kursk, as a major Soviet offensive challenges a German mobile defense.

Will the Soviet breakthrough be successful? Traces of War presents this historical confrontation at a scale designed to cover a broad operational campaign. Each game turn represents one month, while every hex represents 12.5 miles (20 kilometers). Units range from divisions to corps.

The game offers a medium-low complexity level, making its extensive Eastern Front setting accessible while retaining the scale of a substantial wargame. It also includes strong solitaire support, with a dedicated solitaire track card and a solitaire playability rating of high.

  • Two full-color maps, each measuring 20.7 × 28 inches (525 × 712 mm)
  • Three dual-sided countersheets with 303 square counters and 18 round counters
  • One 16-page rulebook
  • Two sets of player aid sheets, four sheets total
  • One solitaire track card

Designed for one or two players, the game provides a focused simulation of the Axis–Soviet struggle during a pivotal period of the Second World War. To play, participants will also need to provide one opaque cup.
