About this board game
Tricks and the Phantom is a 20-minute deduction card game for 2–4 players, combining trick-taking play, forecasting, bluffing, and psychological inference.
In the base game, ten cards are dealt among four players, leaving each player with only two or three cards. Players take turns playing one card face down, then forecast which player has the highest card—the potential culprit.
Every card has a color, or suit, and that color must be shown when the card is played. This gives opponents information that can help them narrow down the possible value of your card. However, card effects mean that the highest number does not automatically win.
- Deduce the culprit from limited information.
- Forecast which player will win the play.
- Use card colors to narrow down possibilities.
- Watch for special effects that disrupt simple high-card assumptions.
- Account for the possible phantom, who may try to confuse everyone.
Points are awarded to the player who played the highest card and to anyone who correctly forecast that player’s victory. The phantom adds another layer of uncertainty, giving players reason to question the information they see and the conclusions they draw.
Although the rules use only ten or eleven cards, Tricks and the Phantom is more than a matter of card luck. Success comes from interpreting each play, weighing incomplete clues, and reading the psychology of the other players while deciding what they may know—or want you to believe.
