About this board game

Trollhalla is a 2011 board game for 2–4 players that takes about 60 minutes, challenging trolls to sail the seas and gather the most valuable collection of plunder.

Once tired of guarding bridges, the trolls seek a new career on the open water. They join forces to explore islands loaded with crunchy livestock, nervous monks, panicked princesses, piles of gold, and casks of grog—but Billy Goats can knock stolen cargo out of a boat if players are not careful.

Players take turns placing their trolls on the board. Trolls emerge from below each ship’s deck and can be assigned to different roles, creating a balance between claiming goods and shaping the voyage.

• Plunder nearby islands: Trolls placed on ships claim cargo when those ships sail.
• Scout destinations: Trolls placed in the sea help determine where ships travel.
• Use special actions: Sea-based trolls also award cards that perform special actions.

Each decision helps develop a private boat filled with valuable loot, while the movement of the ships determines which island treasures can be reached. Players must use their trolls effectively to collect desirable cargo and avoid losing parts of it to the troublesome Billy Goats.

With its mix of troll placement, sailing, exploration, cargo collection, and special-action cards, Trollhalla turns a search for fresh sea air into a lively race for plunder. The player who fills their private boat with the most valuable collection wins the game.
