About this board game
Le Fantôme de l’Opéra is a two-player deduction game for a 30-minute session, based on the Mr. Jack game system. Eight suspect tokens occupy ten rooms in the Opéra Garnier, and one is secretly chosen as the true identity of the Phantom.
One player takes the role of the Investigator, trying to discover the Phantom before La Carlotta escapes. The Phantom player instead works to remain hidden, using movement, darkness, and disturbances to keep suspicion away from the guilty suspect. The game ends when only one suspect remains uncleared—or when La Carlotta flees to safety in Milan.
Each odd round reveals four of the eight suspect cards. The Investigator moves one suspect and may use its special ability, the Phantom moves two of the remaining characters, and the Investigator moves the last one. In even rounds, the other four cards are revealed and the Phantom moves first. Every character can move up to the number of characters in the room they leave.
- Information management: clear suspects from suspicion by manipulating their positions and the available alibis.
- Light and darkness: the Phantom can cause a disturbance only when alone or in the room with the blackout token.
- Distinct abilities: characters can move a padlock, use secret passageways, attract or repel nearby characters, or reveal and hide alibi cards.
After each round, the Investigator clears suspects according to whether the Phantom created a disturbance, while La Carlotta advances toward flight for every suspect not declared innocent. Le Fantôme de l’Opéra challenges both players to read the board, time their abilities, and control what can—and cannot—be known.
