About this board game
1565: St. Elmo’s Pay – The Great Siege of Malta is a competitive, asymmetric tactical card game for 1–2 players, with games lasting about 40 minutes. Set during the historic 1565 siege, it places the Ottoman Turks against the Knights of St John and the defending people of Malta.
Each side must muster troops and resources while overcoming the obstacles in its path. The conflict ultimately builds toward an epic siege across three fronts: Birgu, Senglea, and the doomed fortress of Saint Elmo.
Players take command of opposing forces with distinct perspectives on the struggle. The game focuses on quick, tactical play, offering a thematic re-imagining of the events surrounding Suleiman the Magnificent’s 30,000-strong armada and the island’s small but determined defenders.
- Asymmetric competitive play: Fight as the Ottoman Turks or the Knights of St John.
- Historical inspiration: Every card is inspired by a real person or event from the period.
- Three-front siege: Contest Birgu, Senglea, and Saint Elmo.
- Easy to begin: The game is non-collectable, with no deck building required; simply take your deck, shuffle, and play.
A successor to the award-nominated 1066, Tears to Many Mothers, 1565: St. Elmo’s Pay is also fully compatible with that game. Its title recalls the brutal fall of Saint Elmo, when the bodies of the Knights were floated across the bay to intimidate the remaining defenders—an act that instead inspired the Maltese to fight with the “spirit of St. Elmo’s.”
With its historical characters, dramatic setting, and direct tactical card play, 1565: St. Elmo’s Pay brings the Great Siege of Malta to the tabletop in a compact two-sided contest.
