About this board game
1914: Twilight in the East is a 2–6-player historical wargame with an approximately 4000-minute play time, modeling the battles fought in Poland and Galicia during the first year of World War One.
The game covers the Eastern Front from the Russian invasions of Prussia and Galicia in August through the Battle of Lodz in December. Its four-map battlefield uses a scale of five miles per hex, while formations are represented by divisions and independent brigades.
An innovative combat system considers the magnitude of the forces involved in each battle, along with factors including the amount and type of artillery, flank attacks, and fieldworks. Movement, Counter-Movement, and Forced March rules create a fluid operational game in which armies can rapidly change from attacking to defending.
Combat Effectiveness Level tracking adds an important rhythm to the campaign. Formations must periodically rest and recuperate, while the ebb and flow of operations can leave both sides simultaneously attacking in one area and defending in another.
- Five scenarios: First Battle of the Masurian Lakes, Lublin, Battle for Galicia, Tannenberg Campaign, and the Grand Campaign game.
- Scale: two- to three-day turns, five miles per hex, and divisions with independent brigades.
- Components: eight full-color counter sheets containing 2240 counters, four 22″ × 34″ maps, rule and scenario booklets, nine army organizational charts, and four six-sided dice.
Except for the introductory scenario, every scenario allows both sides to be on the offensive and defensive across different parts of the battlefield. With its shifting operational momentum and large-scale formations, 1914: Twilight in the East presents a substantial simulation of the Eastern Front’s opening year.
