About this board game
Kogge is a trading board game for 2–4 players, with an approximately 90-minute playing time. Set across the Baltic Sea, it challenges merchants to move through a web of trade routes, trade goods, and establish trade houses.
Trade routes do not remain dependable. Cities that were only a few days apart yesterday may suddenly lie at opposite corners of the known world, making each merchant’s journey less predictable. This shifting network is central to the challenges faced by the players.
Merchants must contend with the many dangers that can disrupt trade. The game’s hazards include:
- Storms and pirates
- War and malevolent officials
- Thieves and malcontented customers
- High tolls and silted-up harbors
These threats reflect a trading world where travel and commerce were far from secure. The changing routes between cities make it harder to rely on yesterday’s distances, while the dangers of the road can complicate the effort to build a commercial presence.
In Kogge, success is pursued across the connected trade network rather than in a stable marketplace. Players take on the role of merchants working through uncertainty, seeking opportunities to trade goods and expand their trade houses as the Baltic routes change around them. Released in 2003, it presents commerce as a risky undertaking shaped by shifting connections and persistent adversity.
