About this board game

Stalingrad: Inferno on the Volga is a World War II strategy game for 1–3 players, with a listed play time of 60 minutes. It recreates the Battle of Stalingrad through a card-driven system, wooden-block units, and a detailed map of the city and surrounding areas.

The campaign covers August 23 to November 20, 1942, transforming the battle into a clash of wills between Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin. German units represent regiments and some assault battalions, while Soviet forces are represented by brigades and divisions.

Its map is based on highly detailed aerial reconnaissance photographs from August 23, 1942, when the battle began. Covering the main city, suburbs, and approximately 30 kilometers of the Volga River, the map extends west to Gumrak Airfield, Orlovka, and Alexandrovka. The 1:33,000 scale uses hexes representing 1.1 kilometers along each side.

  • Four play modes: solitaire German versus Soviet AI, cooperative play with two German players against the AI, competitive play for one German and one Soviet player, and a three-player format with two German players against one Soviet player.
  • Fog of war: wooden blocks conceal information and make strength easy to record.
  • Event-driven play: nearly 50 cards introduce key historical events and dramatic surprises.
  • Physical presentation: an 84 × 60 cm laminated, multicolor mapboard and more than 200 wooden and plastic components.

With medium/high complexity, Stalingrad: Inferno on the Volga offers a focused historical campaign designed to play in roughly one to two hours, while shorter scenarios were also in development for selected attacks during the battle.
