About this board game
1914: Glory’s End / When Eagles Fight is a two-player World War I strategy game package with an approximate play time of 240 minutes, featuring campaigns on both the Western and Eastern Fronts.
1914: Glory’s End covers the first three months of the war, from the Guns of August through First Ypres. Across 30 turns, players command corps and selected brigades or divisions on a map where each hex represents 9.5 miles and each turn covers three days. Shorter scenarios include the Battle of the Marne and a ten-turn campaign covering the opening weeks.
Its Igo-Hugo system presents two distinct forms of combat. Prepared Combat lets adjacent units combine their strength, but only if they remain in place; March Combat allows a single moving stack to attack before the defender can react, though it cannot target entrenched units. Entrenchments begin appearing from turn 10 and spread along the front, turning a tactical feature into a growing strategic challenge.
- Rules for forts, cavalry, supply, strategic rail movement, sea movement, and command breakdowns
- Historical or free setup options in the campaign games
- German heavy artillery, forced marches, Plan XVII, and the threat to Paris
When Eagles Fight shifts to the Eastern Front, recreating the struggle between Russia, Germany, and Austria-Hungary from 1914 through the revolution of March 1917. Its large-hex map spans from Romania to Petrograd and Berlin to Smolensk, with turns representing one or two months and units ranging from divisions to corps.
Low-complexity rules retain the theater’s historical character through bloody combat, breakthroughs, artillery support, OberOst and Stavka headquarters, Russian mobilization, fortifications, Guards forces, and the Brusilov Offensive. Random event chits, revised Verdun effects, updated stacking rules, rail lines, and an alternative-history scenario add further variety to this award-winning design.
