About this board game
None But Heroes is a two-player American Civil War battle game for about 60 minutes, recreating the bloodiest single day in American history: the Battle of Antietam.
Set in September 1862, the game places one player in command of the Union army and the other at the head of Robert E. Lee’s Confederate forces. The Union player must find a way to exploit superior resources and seize the initiative, while the Confederate player must use limited forces wisely and counterattack when necessary.
The game is the first entry in the Line of Battle Series, a system designed to keep the action moving. Multiple fire phases are integrated into movement, removing paperwork and helping the battle develop as a continuous struggle across the open battlefield. Historical infantry regiments and artillery batteries interact through the combined-arms tactics available during the period.
- Four large scenarios covering different points during the battle, including action on the following morning
- Three of those scenarios can also be played as two-day campaign games
- Four smaller scenarios focused on the Cornfield, the Sunken Road, and Burnside’s attack and counterattack
- A short learning scenario covering Hood’s Texans in the Cornfield
Unit information reflects original research into the armies’ strength, equipment, positions, capabilities, and orders of battle. The game also highlights the often-overlooked Green units—new troops whose limited training can significantly affect Union strength and battlefield decisions.
With two large maps, 280 counters, dedicated rulebooks and chart booklets, and two six-sided dice, None But Heroes offers several ways to explore the choices facing McClellan and Lee. The final decision is in your hands.
