Aztlán

About this board game

Aztlán is a strategy board game for 2–4 players, played in about 60 minutes, in which rival tribes compete to rule a mythical land through five ages.

Each player guides one of four tribes seeking to survive and prosper under the watchful eyes of the Aztec gods. Peaceful coexistence can bring wealth and prosperity, but military strength may allow a tribe to defeat its rivals and claim disputed territories.

The game unfolds across five stages called ages. At the beginning of each age, players secretly choose one of their power cards. They then take turns placing a certain number of tribe pawns into territories on the board, creating and expanding their domains.

• Five territory types: deserts, terraced fields, jungles, mountains and volcanoes, and cities
• Secret power cards determine tribal strength and identify a favored territory type
• Victory points reward larger domains and domains containing more territories of the chosen type
• Disputed territories can lead to conflict, though peaceful coexistence may provide greater rewards

The power card selected for an age shapes both a tribe’s strength and its scoring potential. When several players occupy the same territory, the strongest tribe may defeat weaker opponents, while choosing not to fight can sometimes offer a more profitable path.

After the fifth age, the player with the most victory points wins. Their tribe earns the right to rule Aztlán, while the other tribes face the Time of Exile. The game supports three or four players in its standard form, with an “Aztec Gods” variant available for two players.

With its blend of area control, secret choices, territorial scoring, and tension between conquest and cooperation, Aztlán presents a contest for survival and supremacy across a changing mythical land.
