About this board game

Highway to the Reich is a tactical company- and troop-level simulation for 1–5 players, covering the ten days of Operation Market-Garden from September 17 through September 26, 1944. With an approximately 720-minute playing time, it recreates the Allied and German combat surrounding the invasion of Holland.

The game focuses on the Allied effort to take and hold a crucial stretch of highway and its bridges. More than 35,000 Allied troops were dropped from the skies of Holland during the operation, and the game places this critical campaign at the center of its detailed simulation.

Highway to the Reich includes an expansive map layout and a large collection of playing pieces and reference materials:

  • Four 22 × 34-inch, four-color soft maps, requiring 108 × 34 inches when assembled for play
  • More than 2,000 die-cut counter playing pieces, with 2,400 counters total across six counter sheets
  • A 32-page rule book
  • Various charts and playing aids, including German off-board movement

This 1977 release presents the campaign through a substantial tabletop format designed for a long, detailed engagement. Players can explore the struggle between Allied airborne forces and German defenders across the operation’s decisive ten-day period.

Highway to the Reich was later re-implemented as Highway to the Reich: The Allied Airborne Invasion of Holland, 1944 (Third Edition).
