About this board game
Pappy Winchester is a 3–5 player auction and area-collection game with a play time of about 40 minutes, released in 2019. Pappy has died, leaving his fortune and ranch plots to his descendants; the heir with the most money will become the new head of the family.
Players begin with $8,000 and two secret objective cards. The board contains 19 plots divided among desert, prairie, and forest land, crossed by train tracks and a river, plus a separate saloon. Each turn, a plot token is drawn at random and all players bid for it. The winner marks the plot as their own, reveals its bonus token, and resolves its effect.
- Use bonuses to inspect face-down mine or ranch cards and learn the value of those plots.
- Move the train or boat, rewarding owners of properties beside their new positions.
- Collect funds from the saloon and strengthen your position for later auctions.
The auction winner divides their bid as equally as possible among the other players, placing any remainder on the saloon. When an auction comes down to two bidders, either player can spend their duel token. A third player shuffles two duel cards—one showing a fired gun and one without—and the bidder who receives the firing-gun card wins.
Shared objective cards sit above five piles of banknotes. Completing objectives, such as owning each type of land or controlling three plots that do not touch the river, lets a player claim the corresponding money. After the 19th auction, secret objectives are scored, and the player with the most plots receives $5,000. In Pappy Winchester, careful bidding, tactical bonuses, and objective planning determine who finishes with the largest fortune.
