About this board game
Less Than 60 Miles is a 2019 operational simulation for 1–4 players, with an approximate playing time of 600 minutes, portraying a Warsaw Pact assault through the Fulda Gap in July 1985.
Three Warsaw Pact armies advance toward the Rhine while US V Corps, supported by West German 5 Panzer Division, executes the CENTAG defense plan. Players contend with three dangerous opponents: the enemy, their own plan, and the pressure of time. The game focuses on command, control, and communication, drawing on the OODA Loop theory associated with John Boyd.
The map uses 5-kilometre hexes and three-hour turns, with regiment- and battalion-sized ground units. A detailed 1985 order of battle is supported by mechanics for reconnaissance, electronic and intelligence warfare, artillery interdiction, counter-battery fire, engineers, ribbon bridges, chemical and nuclear weapons, attack helicopters, and close air support coordination.
- Formation leader skills, army doctrines, and command-related problems
- Action and Event Cards plus random events that increase battlefield uncertainty
- Two campaign games: The Day That Never Comes and One Minute to Midnight
- Three smaller scenarios: The Eleventh Hour, Steps of Our Fathers, and Spearhead
Rooted in SPI’s Central Front and NATO: Division Commander, Less Than 60 Miles is presented as the first module in a planned C3 Series covering the NATO–Warsaw Pact conflict in Central Europe. Its first-edition components include a large plasticized map, 1,056 counters, cards, rules and scenario booklets, player aids, and two ten-sided dice.
