About this board game

Russian Civil War 1918-1922 is a historical simulation for 1–6 players, with games lasting about 180 minutes. Set during Russia’s military and political conflict of 1918–1921, it portrays the struggle that abolished the Czarist regime and laid the foundation of the Soviet Union.

Players control one or more factions drawn from the revolutionary, counter-revolutionary, nationalist, and interventionist forces that took part in the conflict. Because each player’s interests may differ, the game can create unusual tactical situations—including occasions when attacking your own forces is advantageous.

Victory is determined in two stages. First, either the revolutionary or counter-revolutionary side must win the war. Then, the player who was most successful at defeating the forces belonging to the losing side claims the stronger result.

  • Special rules for the Politburo Central Committee
  • Purges, the Czar, and the Imperial Gold
  • A large selection of named leader counters
  • Optional rules for any number of players and for solitaire play

These systems combine military conflict with political and factional pressures, reflecting the divided forces involved in the Russian Civil War. The optional rules also make it possible to approach the design with a broader player count or alone.

Originally released in 1976 as part of SPI’s Power Politics series, Russian Civil War 1918-1922 includes historical notes, design notes, and a two-page rules summary. It was later re-implemented by Russian Civil War 1918-1922 (Second Edition).
