About this board game
Mustangs is a World War II fighter dogfight game for 2–4 players, with an approximate playing time of 150 minutes. It uses an abstracted and simplified method to simulate flying, focusing on the essential challenge of maneuvering into position and shooting down opposing planes.
Play unfolds across a series of impulses. Faster planes move more often, creating a contest of timing as aircraft maneuver through the battle. A maneuver may take several impulses to complete, and a maneuver marker identifies the hex where the plane will finish, giving the game a distinctive system for representing flight movements.
The basic game is relatively simple while still paying attention to selected aspects of realism. Its central objective is direct: shoot down the other players’ planes before they shoot yours down.
For groups seeking a more detailed experience, additional rules add complexity and further attempts at realism. These options broaden the factors that can influence a dogfight:
- Ammunition and fuel limits
- Critical hits
- Pilot quality
- Spotting
- Multiple planes on each side
With its impulse-based movement and unique maneuver system, Mustangs offers a focused framework for aerial engagements without attempting to reproduce every detail of flight. The game includes 95 counters and can be expanded with the Mustangs: Expansion Module.
