About this board game

Hex Effects is a take-that card game for 2–8 players, with games lasting about 30 minutes. In this approachable 2025 release, players race to treat every Hex in their personal Shadow before anyone else can do the same.

To begin, each player receives four Hex cards face up in the space in front of them known as their Shadow. The remaining Hex cards are shuffled into the larger deck, and each player receives four additional cards concealed in hand.

On your turn, draw two cards and take two actions. If you hold a Remedy that treats one of the Hexes in your Shadow, you can place it on top of that Hex. This moves you closer to victory, but Remedies come with a dangerous drawback.

  • Hexes: Cards placed in your Shadow that you need to get rid of.
  • Remedies: Cards that treat specific Hexes while listing side effects.
  • Side effects: Other Hexes that may leave you vulnerable to cards received from opponents.
  • Take-that play: Watch the other players’ Shadows while trying to complete your own.

Every Remedy lists side effects, which are other Hexes you are now vulnerable to receiving from other players on their turns. A Remedy can therefore bring you closer to finishing while also creating new risks. The first player to treat all four Hexes in their Shadow wins.

With original artwork by Pillbox Games and a ruleset based on Side Effects, Hex Effects offers a quick-to-learn card game centered on timing, vulnerability, and direct player interaction.
