About this board game

1969 is a push-your-luck space program game for 2–5 players, with an approximately 90-minute play time. Each player leads a nation’s space program, striving to achieve the first successful lunar landing mission.

On each turn, spend your income to develop your program and improve its chances. You can hire scientists to research technology, recruit spies to slow down opponents, purchase cards that affect missions, or attempt easier preparatory missions.

  • Research technology to improve your mission tests.
  • Attract famous scientists to earn victory points.
  • Complete preparatory missions for points and lunar mission bonuses.
  • Use cards to influence your own missions or interfere with competitors.

The heart of the game is its mission testing system. Each test uses five dice showing success, neutral, and failure results. Successes increase your rating, neutral results have no effect, and failures reduce it. Your final total determines how many points you earn and whether you receive a bonus for the decisive Moon landing mission.

Technology, scientists researching relevant fields, and cards played by any player can all affect the outcome of a die roll. That combination makes every mission a balance between preparation and risk: stronger development improves your prospects, but the dice still decide how far your program can go.

By combining simple dice mechanics with resource management and light engine building, 1969 offers a lightweight space-race experience with meaningful choices. Player interference is part of the design, although the disruptive elements can be avoided if your group prefers a more direct competition.
